Engineers scan job adverts quickly, looking for a few key things. Make those easy to find and you'll get more of the right applicants, and fewer of the wrong ones.
Lead with the work
Open with what the team is building and why it matters. "Help us build the real-time tracking system used by 3,000 delivery drivers" beats "We are a fast-growing, dynamic company".
Be specific about the stack
List the languages, frameworks and infrastructure the person will use day to day. Separate them from technologies that would simply be a bonus.
Show the salary
Adverts with a salary range get more applicants and save everyone time. If you can't publish it, at least tell your recruiter so candidates can be briefed.
Cut the wish list
A long list of requirements puts off good people who meet most, but not all, of them. Keep must-haves to five or six.
Answer the practical questions
- Remote, hybrid or office-based, and how many days?
- Permanent or contract, and the interview process.
- Benefits that matter to engineers, such as learning budgets, equipment and flexible hours.
