Landing the job is only the start. The first three months shape how you're seen in a new team, and how much you enjoy the role.

Weeks 1 to 4: learn

  • Get your environment set up and ship something small, even a fix to the documentation.
  • Learn the product as a customer would.
  • Meet your team and the people your work depends on. Ask what good looks like for them.

Weeks 5 to 8: contribute

  • Take on a meaningful piece of work with clear outcomes.
  • Review other people's code and ask questions about why things are the way they are.
  • Write down what you'd improve, but hold off on big changes until you understand the history.

Weeks 9 to 12: own

  • Agree goals for the next six months with your manager.
  • Look for one improvement you can lead, for the team or the product.
  • Ask for feedback, and act on it.

We're still here

When we place someone, we stay in touch through the first weeks and months, with onboarding support for you and your new employer (and some OpenSourced merch, of course). If something isn't right, we'll help sort it.
